After more than a year of waiting, the follow up to Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, the highest grossing film of 2016, has now officially had its title unveiled by Lucasfilm/Disney.
The official title is Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi.
While it doesn’t give anything away, plot wise, it is an intriguing idea to name the sequel as they have done. It obviously refers to the proper return of Luke Skywalker after his small cameo at the end of the previous film.
This could mean that he has a key role within the film, which has been confirmed by the official Star Wars Facebook page, which reads: “The Continuation of the Skywalker Saga.”
This reveals a tiny bit more. It shows that the films are always centered around the Skywalker family (Luke in Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, and Anakin in The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.)
Curiously though, there were no Skywalkers (by name) at the centre of attention in The Force Awakens, although the main story revolved around the location of Luke, his screen time being limited to roughly two minutes in total with zero amount of dialogue. This opens the door to an already popular fan-theory about Rey’s parentage, unless it means the continuation of the Skywalker’s story since Luke’s last appearance.
It would be unlikely that anyone outside of Lucasfilm/Disney knows anything about the plot or character arcs at this point in time, given how scarce the information was for The Force Awakens. With the title unveiled along with a teaser poster, it is possible to assume a teaser trailer is on the way within the next couple of months to tie in with the other Disney releases.
Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi will be released on 15th December 2017 across the UK.
