Leonardo Dicaprio is set to star in a new thriller The Revenant, changing his game plan in the race for his first Oscar award.
The actor narrowly missed out on an Oscar this year for his biopic The Wolf of Wall Street where he played Jordan Belfort, the high flying stock broker who managed to con hundreds of people out of money in the 90s.
Dicaprio has never won an Oscar award, though he has been nominated several times and many critics feel this is because he plays the same type of character in each film, a young man driven by money.
Later this year, the Titanic actor will be playing a completely different role in the film The Revenant, where he will be portraying a fur trapper named Hugh Glass.
Whereas most of his characters have been loveable (we were even rooting for Jordan Belfort to some extent), this character is a complete turn around on what we are used to seeing him play, which has got fans excited.
His character has been described as “deserted, defenceless and furious”.
The film will be an adaptation of Micheal Punke’s novel from 2003.
The film revolves around Glass’s journey of revenge after he is mauled by a bear, is left for dead and is robbed by seemingly helpful volunteers. He then seeks revenge.
Although there is no trailer for the film yet, it has been confirmed that Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, who himself has two academy award nominations, wrote the film adaptation and will be directing the film.
Although the film has been in development for more than a decade, Alejandro has always shown interest in the project.
For an actor who definitely deserves an academy award after so many brilliant pictures, here’s hoping the change in direction will finally get him there.
