Following its record-breaking haul at the Golden Globes, the romantic musical La La Land leads the way at BAFTA with an impressive eleven nominations, which includes the crucial Best Film Prize.
Once again, stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are nominated for Best Actor and Best Actress respectively with Damien Chazelle nodded in Best Director and Best Screenplay.
In joint second for most nominations, two Amy Adams films have nine mentions, each which are the sci-fi drama Arrival, and the psychological revenge thriller Nocturnal Animals. Arrival is up for key awards like Best Film and Best Director (Denis Villeneuve) with Adams competing in Best Actress.
Despite missing out on a Best Film nomination, Nocturnal received key nods for director Tom Ford and actors Jake Gyllenhaal (Best Actor) and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Best Supporting Actor), the latter of whom celebrated Globe success on Sunday.
La La Land and Arrival are both shortlisted in Best Film along with indie-dramas Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight with the fifth slot taken up by Ken Loach’s Palme d’Or-winning drama I, Daniel Blake.
The film, which depicts one man’s battle against the benefits system, was also nominated for Best British Film, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay while Hayley Squires received a surprise mention in Best Supporting Actress for her role as a struggling single mother. Her competition in that category includes Hollywood heavyweights Viola Davis (Fences), Nicole Kidman (Lion) and Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea) plus fellow Brit Naomie Harris (Moonlight).
The Best British Film lineup sees Blake go up against five other productions which include Andrea Arnold’s gritty drama American Honey and the Harry Potter prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
In the other acting categories, Manchester by the Sea star Casey Affleck will be looking to cement his position as the Best Actor frontrunner as he goes toe-to- toe with Ryan Gosling, Jake Gyllenhaal, Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge) and Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic). However there was no place for Denzel Washington (Fences) who remarkably has never been nominated for a BAFTA!
In Best Actress, Amy Adams and Emma Stone are nodded along with British star Emily Blunt (The Girl on the Train), Natalie Portman (Jackie) and the legendary Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins). Golden Globe winner Isabelle Huppert was not in contention owing to the fact that her film Elle is not released in the UK until March.
The Best Supporting Actor lineup sees British trio Hugh Grant (Florence Foster Jenkins), Dev Patel (Lion) and Aaron Taylor-Johnson battle it out with Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) and veteran Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water).
Disney trio Finding Dory, Moana and Zootopia are nominated for Best Animated Film while the race-relations documentary 13th is also acknowledged in its respective category.
However there were several key snubs made by BAFTA which included the absence of Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) in Best Director while films like Martin Scorsese’s Silence and Clint Eastwood’s Sully were completely overlooked.
The EE British Academy Film Awards will be held at the Royal Albert Hall on February 12th with Stephen Fry hosting again for the umpteenth time!
