The romantic musical La La Lead leads the way at this year’s Oscars with a remarkable fourteen nominations including the coveted Best Picture gong.
The film, which focuses on a whirlwind romance between an aspiring actress and a struggling jazz musician, also secured acting nominations for leading stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as well as a Best Director nod for Damien Chazelle.
Furthermore, La La Land becomes only the third film to receive fourteen noms along with previous Best Picture Oscar winners All About Eve and Titanic.
In joint second with eight nods are the sci-fi blockbuster Arrival and the coming-of-age drama Moonlight. Though Arrival scored well in Best Picture and Best Director (Denis Villenueve), leading star Amy Adams was surprisingly snubbed in the Best Actress category.
Moonlight performed well with mentions in Best Picture and Best Director (Barry Jenkins) plus supporting actor nods for Mahershala Ali and British actress Naomie Harris.
There was also a strong showing for the family drama Manchester by the Sea as it was nominated for six awards including Best Picture as well as three acting mentions for Best Actor frontrunner Casey Affleck, youngster Lucas Hedges and Michelle Williams.
Mel Gibson’s gritty war drama Hacksaw Ridge and the biopic drama Lion both received six mentions each with Gibson landing a nomination for Best Director, his first since winning for Braveheart back in 1996! Hacksaw star Andrew Garfield finally landed his first Oscar nom and will be competing in Best Actor along with Casey Affleck and Ryan Gosling plus Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic) and previous winner Denzel Washington (Fences).
As well a deserved Best Picture mention, Lion also secured Supporting Actor/Actress mentions for British star Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman. The Best Picture lineup is completed by the family drama Fences, the crime-thriller Hell or High Water and the NASA-based biopic Hidden Figures.
In Best Actress, Emma Stone finds herself in contention for the gong along with Natalie Portman (Jackie) and three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins). Streep now has an incredible twenty nominations from her distinguished career! The category is completed by Isabelle Huppert (Elle) and Irish actress Ruth Negga (Loving).
In the Supporting categories, Mahershala Ali, Lucas Hedges and Dev Patel are competing in the male group with veteran Jeff Bridges (Hell or Hell Water) and Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animasl).
The female lineup sees Naomie Harris, Nicole Kidman and Michelle Williams up against category favourite Viola Davis (Fences) and Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures).
Elsewhere, various blockbusters received nominations in the technical awards including The Jungle Book (Visual Effects), Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Sound Mixing, Visual Effects, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (Production Design, Costume Design), Deepwater Horizon (Sound Editing, Visual Effects), Passengers (Production Design, Original Score), Star Trek Beyond (Makeup) and Suicide Squad (Makeup).
The Best Animated Film lineup sees Disney’s Zootopia and Moana battle it out with Kubo and the Two Strings, My Life as a Zucchini and The Red Turtle while Ava DuVernay’s brilliant documentary 13th is shortlisted in the Best Documentary category.
However several films failed to make an impression with the likes of Nocturnal Animals, Silence and Sully settling for just one nomination each while Captain America: Civil War, Deadpool, Finding Dory, The Girl on the Train, Live By Night, Miss Sloane, Patriot’s Day, Sing Street and The Witness were completely shut out.
The 89th Oscars will take place on 26th February with Jimmy Kimmel on hosting duty.
