Fans in Japan have been speaking out about their concerns that the updated version of Godzilla is a little on the chunky side.

A report in The Japan Times tells how fans have been taking to forums and pages of the internet to express their concerns and upset about Godzilla’s larger image.

Some comments have been that the monster has been super sized, that he has become the ‘calorie monster’ and even a ‘Godzilla Deluxe.’

After news of these bashings reached the director Gareth Edwards, he answered publicly saying how these comments should be taken with a pinch of salt.

“I think two people in Japan said that. But let’s pretend it’s the whole world for a moment. I just think it’s comments like that that give giant monsters an image complex.”

Gareth wasn’t the only person to defend the monster.

Kick-Ass star Aaron Taylor-Johnson also gave his two cents against the disappointed fans.

“You know what? Give him a chance. It’s been 60 years. He’s allowed to pack on some pounds,”

The remake of the 1954 original movie was never going to please everybody but even with these bashings, the £160 million budget epic is sure to be a hit with the majority of monster fans.

Gareth is taking all of the complaints in his stride and has complete confidence in the movie.

“I really enjoyed conceiving this movie, and I hope audiences have the same reaction to the film that I did while we were making it. The hairs on the back of my neck were standing up. But I will never be able to see the movie the way you do. I can only see the places where we put the backlight or which take we used in any particular scene. I’m just too close to it to sit back and enjoy it.”

The updated version follows the story of Navy officer Ford Brody (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) who has returned home from duty to his wife and son in San Francisco but is called to Japan on an emergency, an emergency that has not been spoiled by trailers.

The film is set to be released on May 15th.
