Film legend Al Pacino has received his Fellowship from the BFI (British Film Institute).

The Oscar and BAFTA winning actor picked up the prestigious honour from chairman Greg Dyke at last night’s BFI ceremony in London.

The award was given to him as recognition of his remarkable film career over the past 45 years which included an Oscar-winning role in 1992’s Scent of a Woman.

However, he will always be remembered to many film fans for his memorable work in The Godfather trilogy, Dog Day Afternoon and Scarface.

On receiving the award, Pacino said: “This is such a great honour… the BFI is a wonderful thing, how it keeps films alive. It’s an honour to be here and receive this. I’m overwhelmed – people I’ve adored have received this award. I appreciate this so much, thank you.”

Amongst the attendees at the ceremony included Joan Collins, Terry Gilliam, Richard E. Grant and John Hurt.

Previous recipients of the BFI Fellowship have included the likes of Tim Burton, Judi Dench, Christopher Lee, Orson Welles and the late Richard Attenborough.

Pacino recently unveiled his second directional feature Salome, based on Oscar Wilde’s play, in which he stars alongside Jessica Chastain.
