The glitz and glamour of awards season is finally kicking off after the Golden Globes became the latest to reveal their nominees.
Once again, leader of the pack is upcoming drama 12 Years a Slave which has picked up seven nominations including Best Film (Drama) and Best Director (Steve McQueen).
There was also recognition for its lead actor Chiwetel Ejiofor as well as its supporting players Lupita Nyong’o and Michael Fassbender.
It also picked up noms for John Ridley’s screenplay and Hans Zimmer’s score.
Slave will compete for Best Dramatic Film along with sci-fi blockbuster Gravity and real-life films Captain Phillips, Philomena and more surprisingly, the F1 biopic Rush.
Joining Ejiofor in the Best Actor (Drama) category are fellow Brit Idris Elba (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom), Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips), Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club), and Robert Redford (All Is Lost).
In the female category, Cate Blanchett is hoping to add a Globe to her awards cabinet with her role in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine.
Her competition includes Sandra Bullock (Gravity) and British trio Judi Dench (Philomena), Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks) and Kate Winslet (Labor Day).
The HFPA (Hollywood Foreign Press Association) also went for a lesser broad of comedy in the respective Motion Picture (Comedy/Musical category) by nominating American Hustle (also leading with seven nominations) as well as critics darling Her, Coen Brothers flick Inside Llewyn Davis, indie-dramedy Nebraska and Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street.
Hustle managed to land acting mentions for all four of its stars with Christian Bale and Amy Adams being nodded in Lead while Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence are both shortlisted in Supporting.
In the other comedy categories, Bale is nodded in Best Actor along with veteran Bruce Dern (Nebraska), Leonardo Di-Caprio (The Wolf of Wall Street), Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davies) and Joaquin Phoenix (Her).
The female group sees Adams up against indie-darlings Julie Delpy (Before Midnight) and Greta Gerwig (Frances Ha) as well as Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Enough Said) and Hollywood legend Meryl Streep (August: Osage County).
The Supporting Actors nominees see Michael Fassbender and Bradley Cooper up against Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) and newcomers Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips) and Daniel Bruhl (Rush) while Lupita Nyong’o and Jennifer Lawrence are up against Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine), Julia Roberts (August: Osage County) and June Squibb (Nebraska).
The Best Director category features McQueen and O.Russell plus Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity), Paul Greengrass (Captain Phillips) and Alexander Payne (Nebraska).
The Globes nominated just three films for Best Animated Feature – The Croods, Despicable Me 2 and Disney’s Frozen while Pixar’s Monsters University was left off the list.
High profile musicians are also recognised with Coldplay, U2, Justin Timberlake and Taylor Swift amongst the big names to be mentioned.
Several films and actors suffered through various snubs with The Butler and Prisoners being shut out completely while Forest Whittaker, James Gandolfini, Ben Stiller, Tom Hanks (Saving Mr Banks), Jonah Hill and Oprah Winfrey were all overlooked for acting nods.
