The V&A Shop is delighted to announce its collaboration with one of the world’s leading music companies EMI Music to create the first ever postmodern music compilation. The partnership celebrates the music and fashion of the exhibition Postmodernism: Style and Subversion 1970-1990.
The V&A’s major Autumn exhibition will be the first in-depth survey of art, design and architecture of the 1970s and 1980s, examining one of the most contentious phenomena in recent art and design history: postmodernism. It will show how postmodernism evolved from a provocative architectural movement in the early 1970s and rapidly went on to influence all areas of popular culture including art, film, music, graphics and fashion.
One of the biggest names in music, EMI Music has worked closely with the V&A Shop and the music the curators have retrospectively identified as ‘Postmodern’ to produce the first definitive record on CD/DVD and Vinyl of the postmodern era providing the sound to what is often thought of as a mostly visual movement. Co-curator Glenn Adamson writes in the sleeve notes “postmodernism’s negative energy was the most potent combustible fuel that art, design, and pop music ever discovered. Postmodernism was the ingredient that made the New Wave really New. It was the DNA of MTV.”
Created exclusively for the V&A Shop, the double CD and DVD set has 32 tracks and 18 music videos, spanning New Romantic, Electro, Krautrock, New Wave, and Hip Hop to present a curated postmodern mix of artists from both main stream and fringes, the internationally successful and the critically acclaimed; David Bowie, Blondie, Depeche Mode and Eurythmics as well as Kraftwerk, Devo, Laurie Anderson and The The. As Peter Saville said, the music industry was the primary “delivery system” for postmodern ideas. The DVD is devoted to postmodern tendencies in music video, with artists such as Duran Duran, Grace Jones, Devo and Ultravox showing how they used the medium to express style, culture and anxiety about the future.
The limited edition gatefold double LP is for the postmodern music collector and connoisseur. The gatefold features exclusive artwork by Charles Jencks, the namesake of postmodernism and an essay by the exhibition curator. The tracks featured are a point of difference to the CD/DVD with music from Joy Division, Eurythmics, Television and many more. Both albums have been expertly compiled by the world famous Abbey Road Studios, London, and contain rare mixes, alternate and live versions of selected tracks.
