Mystery Jets are set to release their new album Serotonin and have discussed the new direction of the project.

The band cannot be accused of standing still or trading water musically as each project has offered something fresh and novel.

The first album Making Den’s was a psychedelic urchin of lo-fi weirdness. For the second album 21 the band transfigured and put an ironic 80’s slant on proceedings, donning their pastel coloured zoot suits and churning out radio friendly pop songs with Laura Marling in tow.

Now the band have continued to push the boundaries searching for new musical frontiers, ditching the 80’s paraphernalia and Laura Marling in the process.

When asked whether this departure from the second album was a conscious decision band leader Blaine said: “Yeah, it was all considered on this album, we almost purposely didn’t give people something to write about. You know, the only question we used to get asked was “What was working with Laura Marling like?”

“And that 80’s thing on Two Doors Down, that turned into something we didn’t want it to. People can be lazy. So, with the new album I think we definitely wanted it to sound expansive, widescreen. “

Blaine explains that it has almost come full circle and are going back to their roots in a sense saying:

“When we came out a lot of bands we listened to were prog bands, orchestral 70’s rock bands. With 21 we wanted to cut that away and master the art of making sounds. And what we’ve back to is making something strong.”

The band are still going strong when a lot of the bands who rose with them have fallen by the wayside and Bassist Kai Fish puts the bands longevity down to their close friendship saying:

“I think the bands longevity probably comes back to us all being friends since we were in short trousers. We were called The Mystery Jets years before labels had the faintest idea what we were doing.”
