When Sakura Singh Corke, 18, saw the destruction caused by the Australian bushfires, she knew she had to help in some way.
She said: “I was seeing posts on social media and wanted to do something about it.”
Even though Australia is so far away, I thought I could combine Liverpool’s rich music scene with fund-raising to get people at home interested.”
She immediately emailed local bands and venues, asking for their support with organising a fund-raising gig.
Sakura said: “My friend Paul Cassidy, helped me with branding and the poster, as I had never done anything like this before.”
The event is titled ‘A Chord For A Cause’, and she said that if it is a success she may do something similar in the future.
She said: “I chose Jimmy’s on Bold Street to host the gig as they were fully behind the idea and were willing to cover all costs in order to raise the maximum amount of money.”
All the artist agreed to perform without a fee also and the line up includes The Personas, Ambedo Blue, Talkfield, The Blue Room and G33 (Gaia Ahuja).
All the acts performing are either Liverpool or Warrington based.
100% of the money raised from ticket sales will be divided between three charities – Salvation Army Australia, Australian Red Cross and WIRES.
Sakura said: “I chose these charities because they deal with the short term and long term effects of the bushfires, while WIRES is a wildlife charity. I thought this would cover all the different ways Australia has been affected.”
The wildfires have been some of the most damaging in recent history, burning approximately 12.4m acres and destroying 3,000 homes.
The fires come during one of Australia’s worst droughts in decades, and experts say this extreme weather could be a symptom of Climate Change.
Sakura said: “I 100% think the fires are due to climate change. As a young person, knowing that our future is being affected by disasters like this, it has given me the drive to do this while studying.”
The event will take place at Jimmys 130 Bold St, Liverpool L1 4JA on 7th February
