It will certainly be a case of sugar and spice and all things naughty but nice at the Vogue Ball this Saturday, 10th October which has lots of sweet treats in store.
With just three days to go until the Sugar Ball, Darren Suarez, artistic director of House of Suarez, is busy putting the finishing touches to his opening dance piece which is sure to tantalise your taste buds.
Entitled The First Hunt-y, the opening piece has all the right ingredients for a spectacular visual feast of fabulousness with outrageously colourful costumes and mouth-watering choreography.
In keeping with this year’s confectionary theme, the opening piece for the Sugar Ball features a few familiar faces from Willy Wonka to the Milky Bar Kid. But it’s not all sweetness and light…
Darren revealed: “The opening number is actually quite dark. The First Hunt-y tells the story of the birth of the Child Catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and explores the reasons why he hunts for children…”
“However, there will be plenty of light relief in the form of Oompa Loompas with a distinct Scouse flavour!”
Returning for 2015 to the ultra cool venue, Camp and Furnace, located in Liverpool’s creative Baltic Quarter, the organisers of year’s Vogue Ball, House of Suarez, have it licked.
Now an international sensation, the multi-award winning Vogue Ball is a dance event like no other in the UK – where club culture meets high art. The Sugar Ball will also see the return of host with the most, Rikki Beadle-Blair, who admits it’s his favourite event of the year.
Vogueing often imitates the perfect lines and flexibility of model poses seen in magazines such as Vogue, the fashion magazine from which the dance style took its name.
During the Ball, the best Vogue teams from all over the UK [known as ‘Houses’] battle it out on stage in a fight for ultimate dance supremacy. Last year’s event saw a record number of ‘Houses’ participating.
Over 13 Houses have confirmed for the 2015 Sugar Ball including House of Cards, House of Rare and House of LIPA who are creating a giant human gobstopper for the event. This year, organisers also welcome back the House of Shoqlat from the Netherlands, as well as the House of Masquerade and House of Lisbon representing the gay quarter of Liverpool.
They will be judged by Councillor Gary Millar, Liverpool’s sassiest drag queen The Vivienne and famous Swedish Voguer, Benjamin Milan.
The flamboyant costumes are always the icing on the cake at the Vogue Ball and this year will be no exception with a delicious display of spectacular outfits especially created for the Sugar ball.
The House of Allsorts will be presenting their winning designs for the 2015 House of Suarez costume commission for the Sugar Ball. This was supported through Grants for the Arts, lottery sourced funding for commissioning new work. Designers were asked to send in their designs capturing the Vogue Ball’s key elements: of costume, fantasy, realness and sex siren in their creations.
Darren explained: “It was a tough decision but we feel we have chosen the best costumes demonstrating the true essence of the 2015 Sugar Ball.”
“The winners David Graham and Brian D Hanlon from Liverpool and Regina Coulon from Blackpool will be competing for the candy crown in the 2015 Vogue Ball in their own House of Allsorts.”
The event has been sponsored this year by Swizzels Matlow Ltd, Akademix Dance Company; Alice Anastasiou Wine Guru; MDI; Mode; Morecrofts; Puschka; Rare Studio; Sane Seven; Seen Liverpool; The Lisbon and Voodou.
A date has been confirmed for the Manchester Sugar Ball which will be held at Gorilla on Oxford Road on 5th March, 2016.
The Candyman himself, Darren Suarez, commented: “I am really excited for this year’s Vogue Ball. Think theatre, costume and Vogue wrapped up in a twisted fairytale of famous confectionery.”
So indulge your sweet tooth at the Sugar Ball 2015. This year it’s all about over indulgence; sugar and spice and all things nice! Or will it be more of a case of naughty but nice? Either way audiences will witness all things fierce and fabulous with plenty of surprises thrown in from House of Suarez.
