The Diesel School of Island Life, launching in May 2011, will offer Diesel Island passport holders all inclusive access to an extraordinary series of experiences including events, parties, and workshops, hosted by special guests from the worlds of art, film, politics, music and all other creative fields.
With an emphasis on pioneers, new creative communities and aspirational insights, The Diesel
School of Island Life will offer a new outlook, where its inhabitants can creatively thrive, express a point of view about relevant social issues and stimulate action.
All events will bring to life Diesel’s ‘Land of the Stupid, Home of the Brave’ philosophy.

LESSONS & FIELD TRIPS
Field trips and workshops will be offered to Islanders willing to step outside their comfort zone, from dance lessons with Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, to DIY Taxidermy with Charlie
Tuesday Gates.
There will also be a very special series of talks from one of the most fascinating
figures of our time- Howard Marks, who will be sharing his stories and imparting his own unique
Island wisdom in three cities across the UK.
Other highlights include geodesic dome-building,
creating an Island postal service with pigeons, adventures with subversive gardener Vanessa
Harden who will teach citizens how to grow an urban island veggie patch and food foraging
expert Jesper Launder who will show you what’s worth eating in Manchester’s urban parks.
There will also be a special trip to the English Riviera to shoot a music video with Metronomy for their next album, with Diesel Island citizens starring as extras.
DEBATES AND SCREENINGS
Timely cultural debates and panels include creative thinkers that have pioneered new trends in
music hosted by The Vinyl Factory, to Future Human’s interactive discussion on ‘The Rise
of the Micronation’.
Don’t Panic’s ‘The Golden Age of the Placard’ is a chance to explore
resistance, protest and speak your mind; and special guest Goldie leads the way in ‘How to
Start a Creative Revolution’. Glasgow’s Optimo DJs host a film night looking at political action
and music as a force for change and Adam Buxton hosts a special edition of the sell-out BUG:
Evolution of the Music Video.
DIESEL ISLAND DISCOS
Live music and dancing is also high on Diesel Island’s agenda, with Diesel Island Discos taking
place across all Diesel UK outposts. Live bands and DJs such as SBTRKT, Joker, Errors,
Aeroplane, Boy 8 Bit, Visions of Trees, Niki & the Dove, Beat Connection and Mumdance
will appear at specially curated nights in London, Glasgow, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham,
Nottingham and Liverpool.

All aspiring Diesel Island citizens need to do is head for their local Diesel embassy (store) to pick up a Diesel Island passport or visit Facebook.com/Diesel to sign up and unlock this array of life affirming workshops, special guest insights and VIP summer parties. By attending the School
activities or making a brave purchase at Diesel stores, they will be given a Diesel Island visa,
which will reward them with further Island perks, to be revealed throughout the campaign.

DIY Taxidermy with Charlie Tuesday Gates

Charlie will perform taxidermy on an animal of your choice, from a lamb to a pheasant. Recently
demonstrating at a Leicester Square gallery for 200 people with live video projections, she’s been described as, “Your favourite science supply teacher… who’s actually an artist.”

Island Dance Lesson with Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs

Entertainment will be a serious issue on Diesel Island, and TEED will get the Islanders warmed up
and ready for the Diesel Island Disco, with this very special dance session.
Making Island Masks with The Last Tuesday Society
Wednesday 11th May, RED Gallery
This three hour workshop leads participants through the process of creating their own masks
using a variety of mediums from papier mache bases to lace and resin. The Island twist comes
with especially imported materials.
Guerilla Gardening Field Trip with Vanessa Harden and Jotta
Saturday 14th May Bermondsey Riverside
The subversive gardener, CA graduate and iF concept design winner Vanessa Harden, will teach
participants how to grow an urban island veggie patch, create tools from familiar
everyday objects, using organic products.
Goldie on Creative Revolutions

Goldie leads the discussion on how to start a creative revolution on the island.
Message in a Bottle – Experimental Island Typography with Jane Trustram and Geodisic

University of the Arts creative platform Jotta’s head of graphic design Jane Trustram brings her
oeuvre of fun experimental typography exercises with an island theme, inviting you to create an
alphabet from island debris, and learn how to best communicate your SOS messages. Alongside
will be a step by step workshop on how to build your own geodesic dome island home. Jotta’s
art director Dan Price will show how cardboard can be used as a base material for a dome and
adapted to many other urban island materials.

panel discussion, interactive activities and multimedia Q&A with live Twitter board, on how we will live in the future.

Nobrow’s Sam Arthur talks about his independent publishing platform for illustration and the
graphic arts, in their brand new Shoreditch store. The event includes a special preview of their
new gallery installation for Islanders.
Cameraless Pinhole Photography Field Trip with Sarah Roesink
Saturday 28th May, London
Dazed Digital featured urban photographer Sarah Roesink captures the atmosphere of the
moment and is inspired by her immediate surroundings. She will guide and tutor a select
bunch of islanders through creating their own holiday snaps without a “camera”, using pinhole
camera techniques.
