A recent trip to London’s Covent Garden simply had to include a visit to the Sassoon salon, located in the trendy Seven Dials area.
Knowing I would trust Liverpool’s Sassoon staff to the (split) ends of the earth with my crowning glory, and with the pressing matter of a 60s fancy dress party to go to that evening, I turned to the experts at Covent Garden. The task: a retro-look that would be easily adaptable in the following weeks to a sleek, modern style.
Sassoon’s range of vibrant yet subtle colours are enticing, and after spending years as an all-natural brunette shying away from dyes, I decided it was time to have a bit of fun and take the plunge.
With a ‘paint the town red’ theme to my 60s fashion ensemble, it seemed a no brainer to go for a matching reddish brown tint in my locks.
Senior Colourist Mia’s friendly, self-assured attitude towards her colours and her clients made me relax at once. Sensing, and respecting, my reluctance to go ‘too bold’, she talked me through the options she felt would best suit my natural colouring. Opting for ‘violet’ red as opposed to a ‘cherry’ combined with my usual brunette shade, there was no going back as Mia slathered the pleasant-smelling concoction from root to tip whilst I sat back and flicked through the latest celebrity gossip rags.
Despite a bustling Saturday afternoon in the extremely busy salon, once I was washed, rinsed and given a deep conditioning treatment to lock in colour and give ultra shine, I felt like an A-lister. Even through my wet curls, it was plain to see the colour had taken extremely well. The suspense was killing me but first – the cut!
My medium length A-line bob was growing out, and confident senior stylist Geri was on hand to interpret my hair phobias and desires. I’ve tried various lengths of layers over the years, but never tried a sweeping side fringe. In the luxurious surroundings of the salon, and Geri’s promise that she would not go bonkers with the blades, it felt like the day to dare!
Keeping my shoulder-length bob style, Geri trimmed just enough to freshen up the ends before blow drying to define a flipped out curl to achieve the ultimate 60s house-wife look!
Thrilled with the result, I could not stop smiling from the moment Geri added the finishing touches to an ‘all new me’ staring back, I was most certainly ready to party! The red tint to my hair suited me more than I would have ever imagined, and the compliments were (almost) as freely flowing as the wine later that night. And Mia’s kind recommendation of a colour protecting shampoo and conditioner means I will keep my locks lively for longer.
As you might expect at a London salon, costs are a little higher than the average. But average is not a word in the vocabulary at Sassoon, and it shows in the radiance of every customer that steps out the door.
