The chilled-out opening bars of Tracey Chapman’s ‘Fast Car’ blared out to set the stage for Zimbabwean designer Tayamika. The designer chose Liverpool Fashion Week to showcase her eclectic mix of traditional African prints and fabrics tailored for a contemporary look.
Never before have I seen quite so many unique designs in one collection, and every single one of them wowed.
The models walked slowly to the backing track and allowed the audience to view the architectural tailoring from all angles. Bralets, jumpsuits, strapless dresses and high waist skirts in a multitude of vibrant colours and patterns, lit up the stage. I fully expect to see these designs at Aintree for The Grand National next year, especially the fabulous headwear.
There was a short break from the catwalk as guests were encouraged to browse the exhibitor tables (and the bar) yet most stayed seated as Doctors and Coronation Street actress-turned-singer Sofia Spencer took to the stage to belt out her debut track ‘Runaway’ (available to download on iTunes now) to a captivated audience. The performance set the atmosphere perfectly for a shocking finale.
Designer Helen Teiman’s label ‘Amentium’ officially launched at Fashion Week after an intensive six week production period, and when the first model hit the catwalk it was clear to see why only perfection would suffice.
Showcasing a fine array of lingerie, swimwear and sportswear in laser-cut latex, Amentium stunned the crowd. Precision cutting allowed for intricate designs on small garments like bralets and mini-skirts, with fine line drawings developing into digital patterns to adorn a totally unique style of swimwear.
The latex pieces were futuristic yet sophisticated and with a clear vision on styling, Helen produced an utterly outstanding collection. Don’t be surprised to hear she’s dressing Lady Gaga or Madonna in the not too distant future.
My favourite part of any fashion week is meeting emerging designers and finding out what inspires them to develop a collection. In Liverpool we’re lucky to have such a prestigious platform, with national press coverage and far reaching industry contacts to tap into.
The last two nights I’ve been completely blown away by the determination, passion and drive of the newcomers not to mention the guts it takes to send a beloved project out into the world and wait for people’s reactions. Every collection surprised and inspired me and I can’t think of a better city in which to gain support and guidance in the world of fashion. Bravo!
