Liverpool Music Week and local promoters Obscenic have pulled off the extraordinary coup of bringing the highly revered Seun Kuti to the city.
The most ambitious live act ever staged at The Kazimier, Seun Kuti returns to Liverpool for the first ever show in the city he once studied in. Check out his live performance in Dakar.
Local promoter Obscenic has managed to secure the show, one of only two UK gigs for Seun.
In fitting homage to his iconic father Fela, Seun Kuti will perform with legendary Afrobeat group, Egypt 80.
Kuti’s latest release, From Africa With Fury: Rise captures Seun and Egypt 80’s extraordinary power, fraught with the scorching rhythms and kinetic funk energy that has earned the band, under the leadership of alto saxophonist Lekan Animashaun worldwide acclaim as one of today’s most incendiary live acts.
The album was recently nominated for MOBO award and was helmed by revered producer Brian Eno alongside John Reynolds, Godwin Logie and Seun himself.
An avowed fan, Eno has nothing but the highest praise for Seun and his band, hailing them for ‘making some of the biggest, wildest, livest music on the planet.’
Liverpool Music Week organiser and Obscenic mainman Joe Wills said of the upcoming gig, ‘The inclusion of Seun Kuti in the 2011 programme highlights Liverpool Music Week’s taste for diversity following previous festival shows such as Seu Jorge and K’naan.’
‘This without doubt, is set to be one of the most vibrant and uplifting shows of the year. Get ready for scenes straight out of Nigeria’s legendary Shrine’
The organisers are also delighted to present United Vibrations and Dustin Wong on the bill.
Hailing from South London, four piece Afro-punk outfit United Vibrations blow minds and souls with their original take on African music, fusing it together with Jazz, Hip-Hop and elements of math rock.
The group describe their brand of music as 12tone, which also happens to be the name of the label they run.
The release of their debut album Galaxies Not Ghettos signifies the culmination of nearly two years ‘labour of love’.
After performing a killer set at this year’s fundraising Fiesta Obscenic, the band have quickly established themselves as firm Liverpool favourites.
Making his name as lead guitarist and co-founder of the cult Baltimore band Ponytail, Dustin Wong recently opted to pursue his own musical ideals with just a guitar and a simple assembly of effects and loop pedals.
Wong takes great inspiration from a quotation of American folk/blues titan John Fahey, ‘I was playing guitar but I heard an orchestra in my head. So I was really composing for a full orchestra.’
