Rapper Professor Green has hit back at the bad boy image he is portrayed as having, saying he’s actually a ‘stickler for manners’ and is now trying to use his fame for good.
The British rap star, real name Stephen Manderson, has always been open about his past as a drug dealer, which has contributed to his bad boy image.
Professor Green who is known for his angsty, humorous lyrics, got his big break when he collaborated with Lilly Allen on 2010 hit ‘Just Be Good to Green’.
His many tattoos are also something he says added to the bad boy stereotype, but he has gone on the record to explain how important some of his tattoos are to him and what they symbolise.
In 2009 Pro Green was involved in a near fatal attack, when he was stabbed in the neck with a broken bottle. The bottle pierced the skin right through his famous ‘Lucky’ neck tattoo.
He has previously stated how the tattoo, which he got 2 weeks before the stabbing, helped him through and now holds even more meaning.
Although Professor Green is still a musician, recent years have seen him taking on more roles. In 2015 he released his book ‘Lucky’ in which he candidly spoke about his battle with mental health problems.
Professor Green has also presented documentaries such as 2015 ‘Suicide and Me’ in which he spoke about his father’s suicide. More recently he confronted the social and political issue of the rising number of homeless people and how society could help.
He has spoken out about getting backhanded compliments, saying: “I get lots of backhanded compliments – ‘You’re pretty smart’ or ‘You’re so polite’.
“People have preconceptions because I’m a rapper with tattoos. They’re surprised when they meet me.
“I’ve always been a stickler for manners.”
Professor Green’s new single One Eye On The Door is out now.
