Liverpool gig promoters Northern Empire celebrate their fourth birthday in considerable style this Friday and Saturday night, with two events showcasing an across the board mix of the city’s best bands.

Taking place at the Shipping Forecast, the night prides itself on putting an eclectic range of acts on, ranging from indie, rock, garage, electronica and everything in between.

The Rialto Burns headline the first night, Friday 2nd September, a gig that ties in with the imminent release of their hugely anticipated debut album Learning to Fight.

The band’s last gig at the venue in February was a sell out, a feat the electro influenced rock band quintet are highly likely to repeat.

Indie quartet The White Widows, indie/mod band The Dirty Rivers and rock n’ roll four–piece Raw City complete the bill.

The following night begins an hour later and has more of a club feel. The evening brings a more electronic element to proceedings, with Filter Distortion headlining the bill.

The band have turned in several well-received sets for Northern Empire, including a near sell-out date in March.

Also present are rising rock/electronica three-piece Fonetiks, who recently played a storming set at Studio 2, Parr St.

Two electro duos, Gospel and Statement Haircut are also on the bill, on a night which showcases the best in the city’s burgeoning electronic movement.

Northern Empire DJs will be DJing both nights

Northern Empire was originally formed in August 2007 by Richard Garnett and Stuart Adam and held their earliest shows at The Masque with Peter ‘Digsy’ Deary’s band The Sums headlining.

The operation then moved to the O2 Academy 2 in February 2008 and enjoyed a monthly residency at the venue until September 2010.

Notable touring bands to have played Northern Empire over the last four years include Glasvegas, Young Rebel Set, This Is Seb Clarke, Twisted Wheel (500 capacity sell out in April 2009), Shy Child (NYC), Band of Skulls, The Chapman Family, The Lines and Exit Calm.

The night settled into its current home, The Hold at The Shipping Forecast in October of last year, with a headline show by Exit Calm.

Liverpool bands who have trodden the boards at Northern Empire shows include Misery Guts, Seal Cub Clubbing Club, Strawhouses, The Wild Eyes and countless others.

Stay tuned for further previews of Northern Empire’s gigs over the coming months.
