Yoko Ono has admitted that she never wanted her son Sean to follow in John’s musical footsteps.
The Walking on Thin Ice singer said: “Neither of us encouraged Sean to learn songs by The Beatles or by John.”
Yoko felt Sean would find it difficult to establish himself as an artist under the Lennon name and that she wanted him to become an archaeologist instead.
The singer said: “He is an incredible composer and musician and I’m so very proud of him.”
“But, I didn’t want to him to go into music and suffer being the son of John Lennon.”
She has admitted that she owes a successful career to her son Sean, after struggling herself under the weight of her late husband’s fame.
“I’ve been in that position myself, you know, being compared to John.” adding “Without knowing it, Sean probably saved me and my career. I really believe that.”
Under Sean’s artistic direction Yoko began performing every year at her birthday celebration and has recently gone on to collaborate with the Beastie Boys to release Bad Dancer.
“I never gave up believing in what I do and I work with people who understand me and make it happen.”
Bad Dancer marks the New York rappers first release since the death of band mate MCA last summer.
