One of the UK’s best loved and most accomplished artists PJ Harvey played a mesmerising 22 song set at one of the most majestic venues in the country, The Piece Hall in Halifax. A combination that made for a truly memorable night.
The crowd were captivated throughout, and the band were on top form. Starting the set with a big chunk of her latest album, 9 tracks of it, the set grew and showed what a great artist she really is but that may have been to the detriment of the overall atmosphere as it wasn’t until ‘The Words that Maketh Murder’ and ‘50ft Queenie’ halfway through that it felt the crowd were involved in the show rather than just watching it being performed.
But what a performance it was.
There were moments of absolute quietly delivered beauty and moments of pure musical chaos and it all worked together to create a stunning show, in a venue that’s perfectly suited to the artist and the ethereal, poetic nature of her music.
“I’ve not been here before, what a beautiful place” said PJ as she eventually addressed the crowd.
With a closing run of Man-Size, Dress, Down by the Water and To Bring you My Love there can’t be anyone that left disappointed that they’d not heard the hits, but what they’d experienced was a truly wonderful show.
A short encore of ‘C’mon Billy’ and ‘White Chalk’ ended proceedings and marked another unforgettable night at the UK’s best open aired venue.
