Okay, let’s get this straight. Joanne Shaw Taylor can play and her style of high octane blues is so enriched with a deeply ingrained sense of what works. Opening for Joe Bonamassa in the revised venue of The Preston Guild Hall, from the off she held the audience in the palm of her hand and proceeded to blow them away with her abilities. Not only that, but she clearly loves being on stage and hardly ever stops smiling!
Kicking off with Lord Have Mercy, Shaw Taylor barely pauses for breath throughout her 30 minute set and demonstrates just why she is so much in demand on the live circuit. 50 + gigs are scheduled for 2016, with a UK and European tour of her own setting off in the autumn. This on the back of Wild – her 5th album – being released in September.
If this taster is anything to by, which perfectly set up what was to come from Bonamassa himself, then tickets will be much in demand. Both Diamonds in the Dirt, played with so much passion it became a concern her Les Paul might melt, and Watch ‘Em Burn from her debut album White Sugar simply dripped with class.
Here is a musician of supreme quality and one who also holds a voice with enough oomph and control to easily soar high above the sound she is creating. Not only that but the two musicians on stage with her – Oliver Perry on drums and Luigi Casanova on bass – were equally as impressive, holding things together with a rich, rolling rhythm section riddled with raw energy.
A more than brilliant sign of what is to come later in the year, from a consummate musician who shouts from the rooftops that she is going to go a very, very long way indeed and in a very, very short space of time.
