R&B star Rihanna and Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons make an unlikely pair, but their animated alter egos Tip and Oh have a blooming friendship in DreamWork’s new movie, Home.

The film follows the story of a lonely young girl named Gratuity – “Tip” for short, and how she befriends a member of the Boov, an alien race on the run from their enemy.

The Boov, who despite being quite incompetent, manage to hide on Earth by suspending gravity and sending all humans to live in Australia. Unfortunately, the lovable Oh shows his exasperating stupidity as he accidentally sends a party invitation to the Boov’s deadly enemy, and inadvertently, Oh faces the wipe out of his entire alien race.

Running away from his problems, Oh lands himself with the only person who has escaped the human cull, Tip, who is looking for her missing mother.

The unlikely pair tries their best to save the world together. Just like many animated duos before them – Buzz and Woody, Shrek and Donkey – they soon realise that they need each other to complete their mission and live their happily ever after.

The film is joined with silly jokes aimed to the desired demographic, but also clever wit for any adults watching. The general message for kids watching is to be like the happy Oh and not follow the crowd, or be as cowardly as the rest of the Boov.

It’s easy to dislike the film because of the poor workings of the plot. Even for children’s film standards, it’s a very unlikely story as the supposedly timid Boov somehow manage to coerce the entire human race (apart from a little girl) into complying with their demands. But as long as you don’t look too much into this part, you can remember that it’s supposed to be a cute kid’s film with a good message; especially as the film makes a joke of itself for having such an unlikely premise behind it.

It’s questionable if Home will become a franchise, as many are doubtful that it will be as successful as the likes of Despicable Me that has come before it, but even so the light-hearted and warm tale is definitely one to take the kids to.

With all the flying car scenes as well, the 3D is pretty cool if nothing else.
