Gareth Edwards is the young director of the up and coming revamp of Godzilla and with such high expectations to meet, he began looking for inspiration in all kinds of places in order to please cinemagoers.

The problem with recreating a film like Godzilla, is that it is such an old story that some elements have become outdated and if not portrayed in the right way, can seem kind of ridiculous.

The original story of Godzilla, ‘Gorjira’ which was released in 1954 shows an oversized lizard destroying Japan by kicking over bridges and using it’s radioactive breath to blast everything in sight.

So the main task that Gareth had, was to bring such an old film into the 21st century with a believable plot line.

‘So when you make a disaster movie that is trying to say something about our world, you reach for images that haunt you.’

Something that inspired Gareth and can be seen in the movie comes from a news report from Tohuku that showed oil tankers that have been abandoned on hillsides and cities and left to rot.

Images like this are easily used for monster movies, which is a reason why Gareth found it very useful and decided to use it for the sequences that were first shown to journalists.

Modern day film lovers are a lot harder to scare than older generations so it wasn’t only important to update the look of the monster, but also, the storyline itself.

Although Legendary showed faith in Gareth by giving him the position of creating the film, when the deadlines for the 2012 release became obviously impossible, they called an emergency meeting where Gareth once again called on his inspiration in order to show he was still headed in the right direction.

The youtube video showed a Godzilla cameo in Always Sunset on Third Street, which became the inspiration for a short film by Gareth.

This film featured a Godzilla roar and an eerie silhouette of the monster, which Thomas Tull, the founder and chief executive of Legendary liked so much, he used it for the first trailer of the movie.

Gareth Edwards has certainly proved his worth with this movie with his unbreakable momentum and keen eye for inspiration and the end product is sure to be one to impress and haunt audiences all around the world.

Godzilla will be premiered on the 14th of May.
