In the 1940 and 50’s the big screen was all razzle dazzle, glitz and glamour. The big stars of the day were Fred Astaire, Judy Garland, Ginger Rogers and Gene Kelly to name a few. This show goes out of its way to the take audience both old and young back to these golden times and encapsulated brilliantly in That’s Entertainment at The Liverpool Empire this week.

The four principals in the cast Loula Geater, Emma Kate Nelson, Simon Schofield and Sean Smith are more than ably supported by an ensemble of 10. Each number had all the fantasy of those 1940’s MGM films’ tap dancing and more sequins than Strictly Come Dancing and Dancing on Ice together in one glorious night at the Liverpool Empire.

Act 1 songs incorporated the classics by Rodgers and Hammerstein from South Pacific. Puttin’ on the Ritz, Irving Berlin. A Cockney knees up which included My Old Man and Knees Up Mother Brown and finishes with another Rogers and Hammerstein classic You’ll Never Walk Alone. Of which the Liverpool supporters in the audience whole heartily participated in and appreciated.

Act 2 included more classics from Irving Berlin and George Gershwin and finishes with a celebration to the Rat Pack. Such time less classics of Ain’t That a Kick, Luck be a Lady, The Candyman and That’s Life. Which once again had the audience tapping their feet and singing along.

That’s Entertainment brings something different to its show and that is the use of a Special Guest. Liverpool enjoyed The Overtones, Britain’s number –one vocal harmony group. They are a pleasant addition to the show with their choice of seven songs of doo-wop and Motown. Each track had a crowd happily singing along and enjoying the night.

The show provides an easy, relaxing and gentle night out which incorporates good old fashioned music, tight dances that Fred And Ginger would have appreciated. With great voices from the entire cast and guests
