The week in gaming: Satoru Iwata, Game of Thrones, Deadpool and more

Monday 13th July

The video game industry and millions of gamers were saddened to hear Nintendo President Satoru Iwata passed away Saturday 11 July 2015, he was 55 years old. Iwata had a prolific career at Nintendo, beginning as a programmer for HAL Laboratories and involved in games such as Earthbound and Kirkby.

He became the fourth president of Nintendo in 2002, the first person outside of the Yamauchi family, with his time directing over the introduction of Wii and DS consoles.

His words at GDC 2015 exemplify both his passion and love for games, “On my business card, I am a corporate president […] in my mind I am a game developer. But in my heart, I am a gamer.” Rest in Peace Mr. Iwata.

Tuesday 14th July

Jade Raymond, former Ubisoft Toronto boss, has joined Electronic Arts. Her first conduct will opening Motive, a new studio based in Montreal, to collaborate with Amy Hennig on Visceral’s secret Star Wars game. Working with Visceral means Raymond will be involved with Battlefield: Hardline and oversee Dead Space. Motive will also partner with the BioWare team on the development of Mass Effect: Andromeda.

Scott Cawthon revealed Five Night’s at Freddy’s 4: The Final Chapter will be released 8 August 2015. The developer stated a free update with extra content will be available to “keep the Halloween date special”.

The on-going, public split between Hideo Kojima and Konami deepened more as the publisher has removed both Kojima productions logo and “A Hideo Kojima Game” from a new version of the Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain cover.

Wednesday 15th July

Bethesda announced The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited first DLC pack, entitled The Imperial City, will launch: 31 August for PC and Mac, 15 September for Xbox One and the following day on PS4. Those who have an active ESO Plus subscription will receive extra content for free, or visit the in-game store to pay 2500 Crowns.

Yager and Deep Silver have parted ways on the development of Dead Island 2. Timo Ullmann, Yager Boss, explained differences in vision for the game was a major factor in the decision. The studio is now free to continue development on Dreadnought, their previously announced space simulation, and other ideas in production.

Thursday 16th July

Never Alone, the puzzle-platformer game based on Inupiaq lore, is set to receive a first major DLC; Foxtales. The expansion will include: a new story, levels and powers for Nuna and Fox to experience.

Foxtales will add new gameplay elements to Never Alone such as a canoe for Nuna to use and the ability for Fox to control currents. The DLC will launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on 28 July. Other platforms have yet to be confirmed.

Due to the overwhelming hype regarding the Deadpool film trailer, first seen at San Diego Comic Con, Activision’s game focusing on the Merc with the Mouth has returned to Steam.

Friday 17th July

Telltale have confirmed the penultimate Game of Thrones episodic download, A Nest of Vipers, will be available: Tuesday 21 July on PC, Mac and PS3/4 in North America, Wednesday 22 July on Xbox One/360, PS3/4 In Europe and Thursday 23 July for iOS and Android.

The digital download will see the remaining characters battle for the survival of House Forrester as well as the return of well-known names including: Tyrion and Cersei Lannister, Ramsay Snow and Margaery Tyrell.
