With an increasing focus on browser and app-based strategy games one could argue there is a certain degree of over saturation, however that could be akin to any medium that becomes popular and is also a cynical viewpoint.
More often than not games of this genre are lazy due to accelerated production within a fast-moving society. In regard to Pirates: Tides of Fortune this is not the case, in fact the level of detail is visible throughout the game with enough content to maintain
player’s attention for a prolonged period of time.
Players are placed on Isla Fortuna, your own personal haven, under the direction of Captain “Bonnie” Anne O’Malley.
The objective of this Pirates Game is to expand your Pirate operations from these humble beginnings via a world-building aspect that is multi-layered, but slow paced.
In order to progress the game offers a simplistic tutorial, guiding players through important features such as; building construction, in-game currency, defence fortification and crew management.
Eventually players will set sail for the open sea to plunder treasure and raid other gamers islands, producing both a vast pirate and social experience. Music and sound effects create a great atmosphere. Use of voice-over artists enhances the personalities of each character encountered.
“Pirate English” can be disabled for those who don’t appreciate a plethora of puns but it does add to the self-aware sense of humour.
Visually the game looks good, animations are fine and the interface is easy to navigate.
Pirates: Tides of Fortune might not be for everyone, but fans of either Pirates or online social strategy games will not be disappointed. Though it does have its faults they are outweighed by the many positives players will experience for many hours.
