The auspicious Year of The Dragon looms large on the horizon and promises to be a great time for visionary leaders, innovators and problem solvers. Predicted to be a great year to start new projects and explore new opportunities.
Also known as the Lunar New Year, Liverpool is set to come alive with excitement and the city’s biggest Chinese New Year celebration to date.
Liverpool, home to the oldest Chinese Community in Europe, is set to welcome in the Year of the Dragon between Friday 9th and Sunday 11th Feb, with festivities across the city.
Well known locations including Chinatown, Sefton Park and the Albert Dock are part of a number of places that will hold events for the occasion with many being free.
As well as the usual Chinatown takeover which is set to include firecracker displays, parades and family workshops, there are many other ways the city will be celebrating.
Here are our main highlights for you to enjoy and make sure you get down early to snag a good vantage point.
Bombed Out Church: 9th – 11th Feb
The ancient Chinese tale of the Boy and the Pearl will be projected onto the Bombed Out Church. Each evening from 6pm the projections will transform the building with animations and a freshly created soundtrack.
Focal Studios, in partnership with Pagoda and regional artists, developed the piece. There will be wooden dragon installations created by neighbourhood schools and community organisations all around the church to heighten the mood.
Royal Albert Dock: 9th – 11th Feb
Culture Liverpool and outdoor art specialists Walk The Plank along with flamboyant thrill-seekers Bring The Fire are creating a series of street theatre pieces featuring dance and martial arts performances, as well as a 25-meter dragon ,that will float through the dock waterways. Exact times will be revealed closer to the event on Culture Liverpool’s social media pages.
St George’s Square (Chinatown): 11th Feb
The parade featuring the dragon, lion, and unicorn, firecracker displays, Tai Chi demonstrations and much more will be back to enjoy in Chinatown. Along with the renowned funfair, storytelling, street theatre, and an abundance of Chinese food on offer, there will also be art workshops featuring make-and-take activities. The Philharmonic Hall’s Music Room will play host to ‘Harmony of the Dragon: A Chinese New Year Gala’ – a musical performance including a rendition of ‘Great Race’, a tune associated with the CBBC programme of the same name.
