Sunnan return with their new single ‘Takes Me Back’ on August 28th, the final preview of their forthcoming sophomore album Spaghetti Soul, out October 9th.
“Takes Me Back is the musical equivalent of Proust’s madeleine cookie. It’s nostalgia as a way to deal with aging and understanding our future as much as knowing every now is a memory unwritten.” says the band.
Jangly guitars lead the way, kinda country, kinda Americana, but always carrying that western grandeur with psychedelic touches running underneath. Harmonies trickle in slowly, gathering around the melody until the whole thing feels like a memory taking shape in real time.
The band add “The fact that the song was recorded in three different tempos and then woven together makes the music itself a meditation on time.”
With ‘Takes Me Back’, Sunnan close the chapter of singles that has carried them toward Spaghetti Soul — seven releases in total, each one adding another layer to the world they’ve been quietly building. It’s a fitting note to end on: a song less concerned with looking back than with understanding how the present becomes the past the moment it happens.
Blending cinematic soul, neo-psychedelia and orchestral rock, the Swedish collective continue to deepen the distinctive world they have gradually built across recent releases, drawing on the melodic melancholy of Brian Wilson, the dreamlike experimentation of late-period Beatles records, Morricone-inspired arrangements and the emotional directness of classic northern soul. The result feels expansive yet intimate: timeless songwriting filtered through a rich cinematic lens.
‘Takes Me Back’ marks the final step on the path toward Spaghetti Soul, a record that expands on the band’s self-defined cinematic soul aesthetic: merging psychedelic rock, vintage soul and widescreen orchestration into something both classic and contemporary. If debut album Cinema introduced Sunnan’s universe, Spaghetti Soul pushes it further outward: more immersive, more ambitious and more emotionally direct.
Since emerging, Sunnan have built a growing international reputation through acclaimed releases including “My Love For You,” “Wild Horses” and their collaboration with Titiyo, alongside Swedish Grammy nominations, strong DSP support and sold-out touring across the Nordics and Europe.
