Liverpool’s most unique arts venue VideOdyssey, also known as the “UK’s last video shop” – is putting out a call for volunteers to help with a one-of-a-kind film archiving project.

VideOdyssey is known for its retro feel and huge VHS tape collection with a parade of arcade games. A place where the public can go back in time to the ‘good old days’ before the rise of technology.

With a treasure trove of thousands of rare VHS tapes and vintage film memorabilia, VideOdyssey is undertaking the mammoth task of cataloguing and preserving its unique collection for future generations, and they need help.

The video shop team is calling for volunteers to be part of this exciting journey to help digitise, sort, and document cinematic gems that have been forgotten or lost to time.

“We’re looking for anyone with a passion for film and a bit of spare time to join our mission,” said Andy Johnson, founder of VideOdyssey.

The role will consist of sorting and photographing tapes, while connecting with fellow film lovers. Details for applications are below.

Volunteers will be asked to come a few hours a week, to help keep film history alive one tape at a time.

It’s not all work no play it does come with some perks, like a free membership to VideOdyssey and complimentary tickets to special screenings and events.

No prior experience is necessary, but an interest in film history, archiving, or media preservation is a bonus.

Volunteers will work alongside the VideOdyssey team at their creative space in Toxteth, gaining insight into the world of analogue media.

This is more than just a volunteer gig, it’s a chance to be part of Liverpool’s cultural heritage, preserving stories and formats that shaped generations.

The deadline to apply is the 5th of June 2025, email shop@videodyssey.com for more information.
