Continuing with our research into Liverpool’s coolest bands, this week we’ll be looking at the musical history and cultural impact of Michael Head and The Red Elastic Band.
Michael Head is a singer-songwriter from Everton, Liverpool that began his music career in the 1980s. Through occasional re-formations, he first started in a band ‘The Pale Fountains’ but was later joined by younger brother John Head forming band ‘Shack’ where they created several albums even amidst setbacks such as studio fires. They also went on to form Micheal Head introducing The Strands, releasing more albums after touring with band Love.
After a few quiet years, Michael Head and The Red Elastic Band were established in 2013 when they released their debut album ‘Artorius Revisited EP’. They then went on to reach number one on the UK’s Independent Albums Chart with ‘Adiós Señor Pussycat’ as well as hitting number six on the UK Chart in 2022 with Album ‘Dear Scott’ the most successful and renowned album by Michael Head which included popular songs ‘Broken Beauty’ and ‘Kismet’.
Through working with different record companies and producers, such as Noel Gallaghers ‘Sour Mash’ label and singer-songwriter Bill Ryder-Jones, the band have created many alternative/indie hits that has led them to form a strong and supportive fanbase.
Where are they now?
Just two years after their most popular release ‘Dear Scott’ Michael Head and The Red Elastic Band produced ‘Loophole’ in 2024, including a memoir like theme consistent throughout the 12 songs. Record Collector Magazine said relating to the new album: “A modern masterpiece… Dear Scott was our Album of 2022, yet…the follow-up is even better”.
They last performed recently in December and are said to be releasing new dates to perform ‘Loophole’ for even more of their fans!
