Liverpool Cathedral is set to become a dazzling wonderland of light, music and festive storytelling this winter as a spectacular new Christmas experience arrives in the city.

Taking place from 27 November to 5 December 2026, Noël will make its world premiere at the Cathedral, bringing an immersive light and sound show to one of Liverpool’s most iconic landmarks.

Created by acclaimed artistic collective Luxmuralis, the event will transform the Cathedral’s magnificent architecture through large-scale projections, atmospheric soundscapes and visual storytelling inspired by the magic and memories of Christmas.

Visitors can expect a journey through festive traditions and Christmases past, with the building’s towering ceilings, historic stonework and impressive archways becoming part of the illuminated spectacle.

A Galaxy of Stars Created by Liverpool Schoolchildren

This year’s show will also feature a striking new artwork, Constellation, which brings a community element to the festive experience.

Created by artist Peter Walker, the installation will fill the Cathedral’s Derby Transept with thousands of delicate paper stars, each featuring a personal message from a local schoolchild.

The stars will carry messages of hope, love and reflection, coming together to form a glowing ‘galaxy of voices’ celebrating the thoughts and creativity of young people across the region.

Schools are being encouraged to get involved, with educational resources designed for Key Stage 2 and 3 pupils exploring themes including belonging, community and the symbolism of stars at Christmas.

Pupils will also have opportunities to visit the Cathedral and contribute their own handmade stars, becoming part of a collective artwork that will be seen by visitors throughout the event.

The Very Revd Dr Sue Jones, Dean of Liverpool, said: “At the heart of Noël is the extraordinary Christian proclamation that light enters the darkness and love comes among us in the birth of Jesus. The thousands of stars created by children across our region will remind us both of the star that guided people towards Christ and of our shared longing for peace, love and reconciliation in our world.”

She added that the Cathedral looks forward to opening its doors to visitors of all ages, backgrounds and beliefs to share in the experience.

Behind Noël is Luxmuralis, the creative partnership of visual artist Peter Walker and composer David Harper, whose work combines projection art, original music and historic architecture to create immersive experiences.

For this latest production, the team will use the Cathedral itself as a canvas, inviting visitors to discover its vast interior from an entirely different perspective.

Peter Walker, Artistic Director of Luxmuralis, said: “We are delighted to bring Noël to Liverpool Cathedral, creating an immersive light and sound experience that celebrates the wonder, beauty and spirit of Christmas.”

“Through light, music and projection, we are inviting visitors to pause, look up and experience the cathedral in a completely new way.”

Combining cutting-edge projection technology with a traditional Christmas story and contributions from local children, Noël is shaping up to be a memorable addition to Liverpool’s festive calendar.
