Game of Thrones fans have taken to Google Maps in order to bring the fantasy show into the real world.
Game of Thrones season 4 started last week relighting the obsession of fans all over the world as they are reunited with the familiar faces of Westeros.
A fan named Sermountaingoat created the map back in 2012 based on the books A Song of Fire and Ice which included many features including a full speculative map and a natural map.
Now, because the fourth season has began, the map can now be found on quartermaester.info where it has been linked to Google Maps in order to make it completely interactive.
Users can now follow routes that the characters took throughout the series on their journeys and in order to not fall victim to any spoilers, you can set the maps trails to stop at the chapter you are up to in the book, or the episode from the TV series.
George R. R. Martin, the author of the original book series, had made a comment on the original map made by sermountaingoat, saying,
“This is a very handsome map. And based on the information you have, it’s quite good.”
The only problem is with such a map is that it must constantly evolve in order to follow the story of the series. This is a problem that author feels the makers of the map will struggle to deal with.
Talking about the updated google maps version, George said “there’s lots of information you don’t have, so it’s not accurate. There are certain things — the geography and location of the Summer Islands, the placement of Qarth and the Jade Gates, everything east of Slaver’s Bay and the Dothraki Sea… that you would have no way of knowing.”
Whether it is completely accurate or not, fans will certainly enjoy being able to walk in their favourite character’s shoes as they follow the trails they have read about in the books.
