With Paul McCartney’s 78th Birthday approaching on 18 June, the rocker is encouraging fans to ditch meat for his birthday.

The former Beatles has written a short guest blog for the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), urging fans to watch ‘Glass Walls’, a documentary he made with PETA, about the treatment animals face in the slaughter house.

Paul wrote “All I’ve ever wanted for my birthday is peace on Earth—including for animals. That’s why this year, I’m urging fans to watch a video I hosted for PETA, titled ‘Glass Walls.’ We called it that because if slaughterhouses had glass walls, who would want to eat meat? The video debuted exactly 10 years ago. Since then, the public has finally gotten a peek at what happens inside the meat trade, and the demand for vegan food is sky high. Whether you’re worried about diseases that spring from slaughterhouses, the animals who suffer terribly and needlessly, or the catastrophic impact of the meat industry on our environment, please watch this short video and share it with your friends. Thank you.”

The rest of the blog post, written by PETA, points out the ‘cultural progress’ we’ve seen in the last ten years, with veganism and vegetarianism becoming more normalised, more meat and dairy free options arriving in stores and restaurants, and Hollywood having converted nearly all its award show menu’s to be at least mostly animal free.

Glass Walls has been viewed more than 20 million times since its launch, and has surely helped encourage a huge number of people to give up meat.

The post ends by asking us to join in, and celebrate McCartney’s birthday by watching his video, and sharing it with friends and family to encourage them towards a vegan or vegetarian life style. You can save nearly 200 animals a year by going vegan!
