Building on the success of her debut mini-album, Marika Hackman returns with her new EP, ‘Sugar Blind’, released on December 9th on Dirty Hit.
Marika’s music channels something very different to the happy-clappy nature of recent folk, hers is a far more potent vision in the lineage of Syd Barrett, but presented by an enigmatic beauty with a striking vocal delivery more akin to that of Nico.
Produced by Charlie Andrew (Alt-J), ‘Sugar Blind’ marks a significant stride forward in Marika’s songwriting. From the swarming, psychedelic grit of lead track, “Cinnamon”, which Marika describes as about “the dumbing down of humanity”, to the earthy, intimate interpretation of Joanna Newsom’s “81”, each song pays testament to Marika’s rare talent.
Intrigue is at the heart of Marika’s music, but there’s something gloriously attainable about her as an artist, and her commitment to touring and meeting with a receptive audience who are searching for the very same antidotes to the challenges of modern life.
Having spent the summer touring the British festival circuit as well as venturing oversees as main support for Laura Marling’s Australian and European tours, Marika Hackman now has her eyes firmly set on the future. This December will see Marika heading back into the studio with Charlie Andrew to start work on her debut album as well as heading out to play the following UK shows:
