Guitar legend Johnny Marr has broken his hand, which happened during an unfortunate fall while he was out running in London.

The ex-Smith axe man said: “I was running pretty fast and just went straight over. I banged my shoulder and then realised my hand was in a bad way.”

There is fear that Marr’s upcoming tour dates will be in danger of being cancelled if his hand has not recovered in time.

He added: “Obviously we’re hoping there’s no long term damage.”

Luckily for the singer, it is his right hand that broke and not his left, which requires more dexterity to play the guitar than the right.

Marr hopes that he will be able to play his upcoming dates in Leeds on the 24th and 25th of March, despite doctors advising his hand stay in plaster for at least six weeks.

He claims he may have to start drinking heavily to cope with the pain. The singer usually adheres to a alcohol free, vegan diet.

Marr is currently on tour for his latest album, The Messenger, which was released last February. And expects to release a new album in September this year.

He added: “I’ve got a new record coming out in the end of September, the follow-up to last year’s.

“I wanted to do the second one really quick. For me, it was just about being on tour and wanting to capture the spirit of the band and the audience before it wears off.

“I’d been touring for 11 months so I wanted to keep that same energy. I didn’t want to over-think it.”

Johnny is reported to be working on his autobiography, and promises to focus particular attention to his Smiths years after Morrissey’s own autobiography came under fire for keeping his section very brief.

“The Smiths were an important part of my life, and I have a good memory”.
