A singer since she could speak, London based singer, songwriter Laurel Smith, 16, releases her EP MORTALS.
Touching on topics such as dangerously dependant relationships and losing one’s lover, there’s a darker Billie Eilish quality coming through that’s spellbinding.
Bonnie to your Clyde, taken from the EP gives a firm sense of star-crossed lovers racing headlong into trouble, it’s thrilling and frightening but wonderful too. It’s the toxicity of the relationship that this love is built on. The deep synth tones add to the tension and the accompanying video by Laurel herself of the toy car police chase portrays the infinite loop of the disastrous love.
Influenced at an early age by bands her father listened to such as The Police and Pink Floyd she began writing her own material at 10. The complexity and unusual nature of those artists shine through in her current music and she displays a quality of songwriting that’s rarely seen in one so young.
Teaming up with hip-hop artist Luca Santamaria the pair released a two track EP Behind Closed Doors, an almost melancholic sound that’s beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time.
Talent like this doesn’t come along very often and Laurel appears to have a full sense of how to mix the simple with the complex and bring them both out masterfully with a voice that’s profoundly satisfying and rich in emotion.
Already on the road to new and interesting things there’s no doubt that we’ll be hearing a whole lot more from this talented young lady.
