Solo artist Sam Smith has released a music video for new single ‘Lay Me Down’, which is set to be released 15th March.

The 22 year old is dominating the music scene this year, being likened to Adele and having won numerous awards as well as being nominated for many more.

The new video from Capital Records was directed by Ryan Hope, adding to his list of masterpieces that includes The Kooks’ ‘Around Town’ music video, and Bombay Bicycle Club’s ‘Leave It’.

His breath-taking edit begins with Smith stood at the front of a church for a funeral service, singing over a coffin. The chorus then approaches whilst the camera pans to the back of the church, where we see a new setting as a wedding between Sam and another man. The setting changes one last time for the final verse, where Sam is sat alone in a pew.

We see the poignant story of Smith’s character and his relationship with the husband whom we assume to be the person whose funeral it is at the start. We witness the change between the happy wedding, and the mourning of the death.

The video is one continuous shot, all filmed in a South-East London Church.

Sam Smith wrote about the video on Facebook, saying, “This song holds a very dear place in my heart. With this video myself and Ryan Hope the director have decided to make a statement and showcase something we passionately believe in.

“This video shows my dreams that one day gay men and women and transgendered men and women all over the world, like all our straight families and friends, will be able to get married under any roof, in any city, in any town, in any village, in any country. I hope you enjoy it. I love you all.”

Smith also spoke to Rolling Stones magazine on the day of the shoot: “Obviously gay marriage isn’t legal in churches, and we’re doing a gay marriage today, in the church. We’re the first ever to do it.”

Last year Smith’s debut album In The Lonely Hour sold over five million copies worldwide, and he collected 6 Grammy nominations in some of the most prestigious categories including “Album of the Year” and “Best New Artist”.
