Eminem releases a song apologising to his mother, partnered with heart-wrenching video.
The song is called Headlines and was released just in time for Mothers Day in America with lyrics explaining from rapper Eminem’s point of view and how he realises how he treated his mother was wrong.
Eminem, real name Marshall Mathers, goes into detail in the song about his and his brothers childhood and the harsh times that they went through with his mother after his father left.
Marshall and his mother have had a rocky relationship for years, with Marshall expressing this through song lyrics and through digs at his mother in past music videos.
His most famous song to be targeted at his mother is ‘Cleanin Out My Closet.’ in which the rapper attacks his mother on her behaviour while he was growing up.
Now, in his new song, he tells his mother how he is sorry for the way he has acted in the past towards her and how he dealt with their problems.
‘But I’m sorry, Mama, for “Cleaning Out My Closet”, at the time I was angry
Rightfully maybe so, never meant that far to take it though,
’cause now I know it’s not your fault, and I’m not making jokes
That song I no longer play at shows and I cringe every time it’s on the radio’
The video for Headlights is shot from Marshall’s mothers point of view, where she is seen watching Eminem’s music videos on TV, looking through old photos and repeatedly trying to visit him at his home where she is always turned away by security.
At the end of the video, at an attempt to visit him, Eminem is leaving his home and notices his mothers car. He gets out of his car to hug his mum before they both leave and go their separate ways.
The song is clearly a heartfelt apology and while it may not be an attempt to reconcile the relationship, it is clear that Eminem means every word of the song.
He finishes the song with “I’ll always love you from afar cause you’re my ma.”
