Run Like Hell – Single Review

“The Emptiness is my musical expression. I’m the Emptiness and the Emptiness lives in me.”

Introducing Alex Bent, otherwise known as The Emptiness. Based in Saskatchewan, the 22-year-old songwriter formulates his music through the use of an interesting concept.

His name, The Emptiness refers to his musical expression. As he puts it, “far from being a blank void, the Emptiness is vast, expansive, textured and nuanced.” All of which suitably describes his latest single, ‘Run Like Hell’.

Set to appear on his upcoming album ‘Dead, In the Water’, which is expected to be released in Spring this year, ‘Run Like Hell’ teases the sound that will feature on possibly Bent’s deepest musical exploration yet.

The track combines samples from Nine Inch Nails’, ‘Hurt’ and Wu Tang Clan’s, ‘C.R.E.A.M’ and results in what only can be described as a sort of refined darkness.

Infusing modern R&B over a techno pulse, ‘Run Like Hell’ is the sound track to late night driving with no destination in mind. Smooth atmospherics lie beneath the music, whispering to the listener and forming a unique eeriness that haunts the song.

The track seems to lure you into a strange false sense of security. A certain warmth transcends from a soulful voice on the surface whilst something far more sinister dwells beneath.

‘Dead, In the Water’ will mark the next chapter of Alex Bent’s solo musical journey. ‘Run Like Hell’ is the first indication that his latest route through the Emptiness will have never been so profound.
