Local authorities in Kurt Cobain’s hometown of Aberdeen in Washington have announced the first annual Kurt Cobain Day.

The event will take place of 20 February – the late Nirvana frontman’s birthday, with reports of an entire week dedicated to the rock icon.

Mayor Bill Simpson said: “Aberdeen residents may justifiably take pride in the role our community played in the life of Kurt Cobain and the international recognition our community has gained from its connections with Kurt Cobain and his artistic achievements,”

The Smells Like Teen Spirit singer is also being honoured in the town of Hoquiam where he lived for a short time. Hoquiam’s Official Nirvana Day will take place on 10 April, the same day that the band are set to be welcomed into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

In 2011, Aberdeen city council voted against naming a local bridge after the guitar legend, due to his drug use and suicide in 1994.

Cobain’s childhood home was listed for sale last year and although its physical value is £40,000, the asking price is £300,000. The property currently remains on the market.
