After a much anticipated album, Bring Me the Horizon left fans in awe last month with the multitude of genres incorporated in their new album “That’s the Spirit”

Jumping back to 2013 when they released Sempiternal, the band managed to keep their metalcore reputation by standing strong with their famously well-known genre. Although this change can be considered a breath of fresh air for the fans, it’s also a huge step from the fan base they have created in previous years.

Front man Oli Sykes has reportedly stated in a pre-release interview that the new album is supposed to be a celebration of depression, although this may seem slightly unorthodox he followed it up with: “it’s better to accept depression rather than trying to block out the darkness.”

Starting off the album with an intro that could be easily labelled as dubstep however slowly but surely showing their metalcore edge, Sykes knocks it out of the park with his vocals once again.

Halfway through Happy Song it’s easy to pinpoint a Papa Roach inspired vocal track, less than four songs later you begin to hear a Linkin Park early 90’s style showing through. The overall theme of the album is fairly obvious as Sykes is clearly trying to make light of a bad situation by pushing through the barrier and opening up Mental Health as an issue to not be afraid of.

By adding an upbeat spin to the tracks, the band are sending a message to their fan base that it’s okay to accept yourself for who you are. Which in this day and age is a message that is incredibly important.

Coming to the conclusion that Bring Me the Horizon have matured along with their fans and the ever growing music culture, “That’s the Spirit” is easily described as a victory for the band and although cutting it very fine with the use of different styles throughout, they just managed to make it out the other side.
