Hard rockers Alter Bridge and Slaves to Gravity turned up at Rock City on the 20th with their guitars set firmly to 11.
Rock City is one of the last few truly independent rock clubs left out there and long time favourite for bands to play, as Alter Bridge proved.
The 2000 capacity venue was packed to the rafters, which seemed strange as it was a very early start for such a behemoth rock show.
Normally you only get the teeny bopper bands with 6.30 doors, but no one seemed to care and by 7 the place was swarming and the beer was flowing.
Slaves to Gravity got the crowd whipped up into a frenzy playing through stellar tracks like Big Red, Mr. Regulator and Honesty.
Alter Bridge entered the fray at 8 and had to make a sharp exit some time after to make way for a regular club night on at the Rock City.
Lead singer Myles Kennedy has an amazing vocal range live, the emotion he puts across when singing is exceptional, from the harder edgier stuff all the way to the mellower acoustic songs like Watch Over You & Wonderful Life.
There was fantastic twin guitar work on show between Myles Kennedy and Mark Tremonti. With a voice like Myles’s, it is easy to forget how good a guitarist he is.
The set list had good mix of old and new songs and despite the new album not being out that long, most of the crowd knew the words and were able to sing along jovially from start to finish.
Myles was laughing and lost concentration during one song and when it had finished, he apologised for his sloppiness and said it was because drummer looked like he was in a “fish bowl” to the crowds amusement.
Before playing Blackbird, Myles opened up and said the inspiration for the song came from a guy called Mark who he used to work with. He was a big Beatles fan and always used to always play Blackbird on an acoustic guitar. It added a personal touch to the night.
Myles also talked about the last time they played at Rock City, Myles mentioned there was a power cut and that he was glad they made it further into their set this time.
The lads gyrated at the front of the stage, looking like the archetypal rockstars they are, and played through hits like Broken Wings, Open Your Eyes and Watch Over You.
