Simpsons creator Matt Groening has revealed the characters in his hit show were named after members of his own family.

The revelation came following the death of his Mother in April, aged 94, after which he wrote in her obituary “She married her classmate Homer Groening, whom she chose because he made her laugh the most.”

Matt, creating the series in 1987, named the family Marge, Homer, Lisa and Maggie after his Mum, Dad and sisters.

Bart, the ten-year-old delinquent, was based on Matt’s brother Mark. Originally called Matt, he changed the name fearing producers would dislike it.

It was also revealed that her maiden name was Wiggum, the name of Springfield’s Chief Police officer, and her eldest daughter Patty, who appears as Marge’s sister in the show.
