A packed audience at Birmingham Town Hall saw the screening of the world premiere of the fifth series of the hit crime series Peaky Blinders.

Season four concluded in December 2017, so fans have been waiting for a while for the return of the hard-hitting drama.

The Sunday night series is due return to BBC 1 screens in August, but absent from the premier was the main man himself, Cillian Murphy.

Like him, also Sam Clafin, a new member of the Peaky Blinder’s cast, was not at the celebrity screening.

Clafin is set to join Peaky Blinders as Oswald Mosley, the discredited politician who founded the British Union of Fascists in 1932.

One of the aims of the new season is also to explore the rise of fascism in the pre-war era of the 1930s.

Not only are two new cast members arriving, but there are some departures. Tom Hardy, who played the Alfie Solomon until his character died at the end of Series 4.

However, series five is billed as the “best yet” – a claim that is yet to be tested.

The synopsis reads: “Peaky Blinders series five finds the world thrown into turmoil by the financial crash of 1929. Opportunity and misfortune are everywhere.

“When Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) is approached by a charismatic politician with a bold vision for Britain, he realises that his response will affect not just his family’s future but that of the entire nation.”

Speaking about the upcoming series the producer Steven Knight said: “The story of the Peaky Blinders and of the Shelby family gets woven into the political fabric of Britain and Europe as the 1920s end and the thirties begin. Tommy Shelby faces the darkest force he has ever faced and his struggle is as relevant today as it was then.”

As Knight said in another interview audiences have to expect an incredible psychological transformation from Mr. Shelby that will completely reveal his good side. We will not see again the Shelby’s family leader using his power to further manipulate their surroundings.

Certainly this will not be the last season for the show. The director has said that his ambition is to make it a story of a family between two wars, and doing that will take further seasons.

It has also been confirmed that the director is already writing Season 6.

The show’s creator and the executive producer have also revealed the team are in discussions about a possible film spin-off.
