Apple now has exclusive streaming rights to the much loved childrens show Fraggle Rock, but what does this mean for the show? First, it means that from today, all the existing episodes of Fraggle Rock, produced from 1983 until 1987, and several specials, will be available to Apple TV subscribers in over 100 countries.
Although we’re used to seeing some older content on the likes of Netflix and NowTV, this is the first time Apple TV has featured a show that is not a recent production. It’s been suggested that Apple may be looking to purchase other, older, shows and movies, to help build up their back catalogue, and make them a better competitor to other streaming services.
There’s a lot more to come than just the original show though, a full-blown Fraggle Rock reboot has begun with Fraggle Rock: Rock On! The show is a collection of ‘mini episodes’, starring fan favourites such as Gobo, Red, Boober, Mokey, Wembley, and Uncle Travelling Matt, featuring brand new stories, and classic Fraggle songs, to keep fans old and new entertained.
Being dubbed a ‘pandemic production’, the show has been filmed using mobile phones, no prizes for guessing the brand, inside the homes of various cast and crew members, focusing on the familiar Fraggle characters, while they’re trapped in their individual caves, trying to find new ways to keep connected.
Following this, Apple has decided to opt for a more extensive deal, which will include a ‘formal reboot’ of the show, bringing back the show with full length episodes. This revival will feature the familiar characters from the original show, and have ‘the same spirit as the classic’.
Matt Fusfeld, and Alex Cuthbertson, will be working on the show as show runners and writers, with Dave Goelz, and Karen Prell, who played some of the characters in the original show, are also ‘attached’ to the project, though their involvement has not yet been commented on.
