Videogame adaptations haven’t had the best of times. In the past year, both Assassin’s Creed (2016) and Warcraft: The Beginning (2016) were intended to be steps in the right direction, but both turned out to be unfortunate disappointments. Now the hopes rest on the shoulders of Tomb Raider.

Since the reveal of the first trailer, we haven’t seen much of the new Tomb Raider movie beside a few posters and images. Today, however, we have been bestowed with a new trailer that gives us a better idea of what we can expect from the upcoming reboot, and it looks pretty cool.

Swedish actress Alicia Vikander stars as the new Lara Croft, after Angelina Jolie’s two guilty pleasure Tomb Raider movies, and it looks like Warner Bros. have picked the right woman for the job.

The new film is a loose adaptation of the rebooted videogame series, which saw Lara go from a young woman searching for her father into a hardened survivor as she tried to escape an island she becomes stranded on.

Directed by The Wave’s Roar Uthaug, the movie certainly looks more realistic and grounded compared to the Jolie outings. Whether this is good or bad remains to be seen, but we get a good idea of how the film will play out.

The action looks spectacular, the effects look good and the cast seem to be the best choices, with Dominic West as Lord Richard Croft and Walter Goggins as Mathias Vogel.

As the film edges towards the release date, we can hope that this is the film that breaks the mould as the first truly good videogame adaptation and that this could be the start of a great new franchise.

Tomb Raider will be released on 16th March 2018.
