This evening saw the upcoming Terminator sequel Genisys release its first trailer online.
The successful sci-fi series has not quite managed to reach the heights of other popular film franchises like Lord of the Rings or Toy Story but it still remains a hit with audiences.
James Cameron’s blistering 1984 film The Terminator does seem a bit dated now but back then, it set the standard for what a sci-fi blockbuster should have been like with its bad-ass characters (The Terminator, Sarah Connor) and its enthralling story.
Several years later, it was eventually overshadowed by it superior sequel Judgement Day, a film that benefited from its incredible use of special effects and a darker tone. This was also around the time that Arnold Schwarzenegger was at his prime as he had become more prominent in the action-film genre.
It took a while for another outing to be made but 2003’s Rise of the Machines proved to be somewhat disappointing aside from having the beautiful Kristianna Loken in it as the villainous female Terminator.
The last outing for the franchise was the 2008 sequel Salvation which unfortunately was overshadowed by star Christian Bale’s rant at a cameraman during filming.
While it has been a lengthy wait for Terminator fans, it would appear that the franchise is set to make its big comeback with Genisys. Though reboots have been hit and miss with audiences recently, the footage for the new film already promises plenty of thrills and action as well as the long-awaited return of Arnie.
Going through the trailer, the preview begins with a focus on the futuristic world in which John Connor (now played by Dawn of the Planet of the Apes star Jason Clarke) signals his intent to stop the world from being destroyed by the machines.
Just like the original film, Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) is sent back in time to track down John’s mother Sarah whose life is under threat.
When we see Reese wandering through a clothes store, he is almost confronted by a cyborg only for our heroine (played by the elegant Game of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke) to drive a van through the shop and knock him down.
Hearing Clarke utter the infamous line “Come with me if you want to live.” makes you realise just how bad-ass she can be in these feisty female roles though it’s unlikely that she’ll ever surpass her portrayal of the Khaleesi in the acclaimed HBO series.
As Kyle and Sarah drive through Washington D.C, they discuss the killer robot with the latter insisting that ‘we’ took care of him.
This leads to the much-anticipated sequence of Arnie confronting his younger self by blasting him with his shotgun.
As we hear the blast of the iconic Terminator music play over the conclusion of the trailer, the big action shot is saved towards the end.
Reminiscent of the truck turning over in The Dark Knight, we get a similar shot here of a school bus containing our heroes being flipped upside down with Sarah then having to save Kyle from falling to his death.
To leave Terminator fans even more ecstatic and wanting more, a bonus scene shows Arnie utter the classic line “I’ll be back” to a bemused Sarah.
While there are bound to be those critical of the decision to reboot the Terminator franchise, you can’t deny how captivating this trailer is and it will be interesting to see how it matches up against the likes of Avengers: Age of Ultron and Star Wars: The Force Awakens next year.
Terminator: Genisys will hit cinemas on July 3rd 2015.
