Pixar began making sweet shorts, both funny and clever. Now with each new Pixar feature, the clever kids behind the main show create something to ease you into the right state of mind and prove their extreme talent for producing brilliantly simple, yet powerful animation.
Toy Story was the original feature that really caught people’s imagination and put Pixar on the map.
Next month sees the release of the third Toy Story film and the folks at Pixar have pulled out another original short to show us their skills before the main presentation.
The official synopsis goes a little something like this;
“When Day, a sunny fellow, encounters Night, a stranger of distinctly darker moods, sparks fly! Day and Night are frightened and suspicious of each other at first, and quickly get off on the wrong foot.
“But as they discover each other’s unique qualities — and come to realize that each of them offers a different window onto the same world — the friendship helps both to gain a new perspective.”
Starting life as an enthusiastic little lamp playing with a ball – now Pixar’s iconic image – the shorts have grown into full scale mini episodes of wordless witty slapstick, which like all Pixar creations appeal to young and old alike and it’s latest offering sounds like it will be a delicious slice of Pixar goodness.
Whether it’s a one man band competing for a little girl’s penny, a tin toy being terrorised by a sadistic slobbering baby or the poor stork that delivers the not so cute offspring the shorts have always represented what Pixar is all about; The challenges of growing up, life and getting through them with a sense of humour.
For the Birds is the perfect example of Pixar’s mini life lessons and featured before one of their top five films, Monster Inc.
In three minutes Pixar teach kids what happens to bullies when a rabble of snipping little birds try to get rid of a newcomer from the pylon and get their comeuppance.
