With the cancellation of this years Eurovision song contest, due to the Corona virus, fans of the competition can look forward to seeing something a little different. Although there was a virtual alternative from the official competition on May 16th, Eurovision fans can now get behind a new Netflix movie, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. Set to premiere on June 26, the movie will star Rachel McAdams, and Will Ferrell, as Sigrit Ericksdottir, and Lars Erickssong, two Icelandic performers who have the chance to perform at Eurovision.
Although the film is fictional, it is based on the music contest, as we can tell from Netflix having released Volcano Man, a song from the movie, as the trailer. Will Ferrell has provided vocals for the song, but My Marianne sings Rachel McAdams parts.
With a Scandinavian landscape, out there, futuristic, viking inspired outfits, a song that makes you want to either dance, or never listen to it again, and plenty of Eurovision inspired sweeping shots of the actors, this movie looks like it will provide us with all the cheese, and WTF moments, we’ve come to expect from the competition that brings Europe together. The charm of the competition has always been the combination of brilliance, and hilarity, and this movie looks to have really taken those aspects on board.
As well as Ferrell, and McAdams, Demi Lovato, Pierce Brosnan, and Dan Stevens, who has tweeted the movie with be ‘erupting soon’, will also be starring in the move, showing off Netflix’s ability to now attract big name stars to their productions.
All in all, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga promises to be a lot of fun, and with the cancellation of the real thing, its nice to just have something to fill that hole, and hopefully give us all a good laugh, as well a few good songs.
