Joseph Gordon-Levitt has been confirmed to star in Chris Nolan’s upcoming Batman – The Dark Knight Rises.

Levitt, who starred in Inception with Nolan, has been handed the role of John Blake, a Gotham City Police Officer who Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldham) assigns to a special assignment.

The news ends rumours that he was set to be cast in the villainous role of Alberto Falcone, the son of a former Gotham crime boss.

Another Inception actor who has officially joined the cast is Marion Cotillard. The Oscar winner will play a board member of Wayne Enterprises, Miranda Tate.

Nolan defended his decision to add yet more of the Inception cast to the Batman film, with Tom Hardy ready to terrorise the bat as super-villain Bane; “When you collaborate with people as talented as Marion and Joe, it comes as no surprise that you would want to repeat the experience.”

The Dark Knight Rises will be released July 2012
