Walt Disney first released his animated fairytale Sleeping Beauty back in the 50s, telling the tale of a young princess who was struck with a curse that on her 16th birthday, she would prick her finger on a spinning wheel and die.
Famously she was saved with true loves kiss and lived happily ever after. However, what we didn’t hear was the other side of the story, that of Maleficent, one of Disney’s most iconic villains.
This summer, we are be invited to learn about her story and how she came to be the evil sorcerous we all know and love to hate.
The film is already stirring up a buzz with two trailers showing us Angelina Jolie in all her glory, recreating some of the scenes that we see in the animated film, including the growing of the huge thorny trees that Maleficent casts in order to stop the prince from reaching the princess.
With Jolie’s amazing talents partnered with the hypnotic singing talents of Lana Del Rey, these trailers let us know we’re in for a treat.
The film is directed by Robert Stromberg, although first choice was Tim Burton, he had to turn down this project in order to focus on some of his others.
However Stromberg has won Oscars for production design for other great films such as Alice in Wonderland and Avatar so it is in capable hands.
Although the film is set to be a hit, the director did have some trouble with tweaking some of the opening scenes, causing him to re-film them over a period of eight days.
But Angelina will not play a part in these scenes, since she will be far away in Australia directing her new film Unbroken.
The Disney film will hit the big screens on May 30 2014.
